Cricket Batting Pads Buying Guide: Size, Coverage, Weight and Straps
A practical guide to choosing cricket batting pads that fit the knee, shin and playing style correctly.
Correct size is more important than brand
The knee should sit naturally in the intended knee area while the pad covers the shin without interfering with your stance or running. A pad that is too long or too short can move awkwardly during play.
Try your batting stance and movement
Walk, bend the knee and take a few shadow batting movements. The pad should stay secure without forcing you to change your normal stance.
Weight versus coverage
Lighter pads can feel quicker for running and movement, while more substantial construction may feel more protective. Do not choose only by the lightest advertised weight; fit and stable coverage remain the priority.
Straps and comfort
Check whether straps sit comfortably behind the leg and whether their adjustment range suits you. Poor strap positioning can become irritating during long innings even when the front of the pad fits well.
Left/right design
Some pad designs are shaped for a particular leg or batting orientation. Check the manufacturer's product description so you buy the correct configuration rather than assuming every model is interchangeable.
Before buying
- Measure according to the brand's own sizing instructions.
- Wear the shoes and trousers you normally play in when testing fit.
- Check knee alignment, shin coverage and running comfort.
- Confirm the return policy before outdoor use.
